(Ohio).- Governor Mike DeWine asks the Ohio Casino Control Commission to eliminate proposition bets, citing growing concerns over their impact on the integrity of sports.

Ohio Governor Urges Ban on Prop Bets in the State

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is urging the Ohio Casino Control Commission to remove proposition bets—commonly known as prop bets—from the list of legal betting options in the state.

Prop bets are a type of sports wager that allows individuals to place bets on specific events within a game, such as how many points a basketball player will score or whether a baseball player will hit a home run.

In his request to remove them, DeWine said “micro prop bets” on specific events can be problematic because they are completely controlled by a single player.

The governor said he will be asking the commissioners and players unions for the six major sports leagues in the United States – Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the Women’s National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League and Major League Soccer – to support his effort.

The push from DeWine comes after two players for MLB’s Cleveland Guardians were placed on leave as the league conducts a sports betting investigation.

“The harm to athletes and the integrity of the game is clear, and the benefits are not worth the harm. The prop betting experiment in this country has failed badly. I call on the Casino Control Commission to correct this problem and remove all prop bets from the Ohio marketplace,” DeWine said.
